Older, but no wiser

I’m looking for words about chance, unpredictability, and their place in shaping our lives in ways large and small. If I could get my act together, such words would be a lead-in to this link, telling about one such chance event that sprang out of the blue and introduced me to an exciting new pathway.

But my act is definitely not together, to the extent that I managed to miss my stop on the train going to work this morning, and nearly did the same coming home tonight.
